Song #52: ‘It’s Over’

It’s the last day of the year. Just a few hours left. It’s a time for new beginnings and for stocktaking reminiscences – and for us, it’s a time to celebrate an ending, and say goodbye!

Just over four hours of recorded music later. 253 minutes. Roughly something like seven or eight hundred hours of recording, at a conservative estimate. And yep: while working full time. What a year!

For 52 Songs is now complete. Did it. This week’s song – the oldest in my knapsack of “songs that have yet to be made real” – is the closer. I couldn’t resist placing it last, given my long-time affection for it and its lyrical content.

So much gratitude
First though, some thanks are desperately required. Continue reading

Song #51: ‘Helpless’

This week’s song was begun at least a year ago or more. I met a friend for lunch and when I asked how he was, as you do, it was a rare time where someone has to tell the absolute truth because there is no hiding, no gloss.

And it was heartbreaking. A tragic accident had just happened within his family, and they lost someone – far, far too young. Continue reading

Song #50: ‘So What’

Just an acoustic guitar and voice for the most part – though I couldn’t resist going a little bit larger at the end there. As is my wont, it must be said.

This song began quite a few years ago I think, and I always liked the slow pace and the wistful feel, with lyrics looking back wryly on memories and past efforts at music or life or love.

Oh yes indeed – it works somewhat a treat for the HALF-CENTURY, my friends! Looking back at a fair whack of music, are we not?

Anyhoo, I also dig the change at the end, when it soars into the searing heat of harder thoughts, things that hurt to remember, but ends up asking: “So what?”.

I find it harsh but strangely satisfying to finish such a pretty song so rudely. It seems more realistic. (Note: rude words, also.)

I hope it taps into a few of your own memories as well.

P.S. Also has one of my favourite lines from being a naughty kid – “Lliam, you’re too big for your boots!”. Love it.

This song came to me, oddly enough, as I was ambling down Martin Place to forage for some lunch, a few weeks back. Strange how these things work. Or it could just be my funny brain…

Nonetheless, this is one of those lovely songs that’s not very song-like. It’s a dreamy space “skyscape” with so much room in which to think and drench yourself, you may feel like floating. Or tripping out. Up to you. Continue reading

So. This is the start of the final five songs. It’s all happening. It’s all here. It’s all nearly at an end.

Feelings? Mixed. Like a cracking cocktail.

And here’s a heaving emotional one to kick it off. It’s a heavy subject… Continue reading

Welcome to Summer!

This week goes perfectly with the bouncing new season vibe – it’s all punchy groove and (hopefully) infectious goodness. It’s all about fun, all about yo’ hips.

Here’s a little sweet nothing of piano and voice, and a slab of loveliness. As it should be.

This song really came out quickly, and even though it gets close to some serious luscious pop cheesiness, it’s still cool in my books.

Sing it to your lover.

It’s time to get into some sweet ol’ fashioned rockness personified! Apparently that was English.

Anyhoo, this is an unashamed nod in the direction of some old bands that we know and love.

It’s the most rockin’ track I’ve put out in the 52 Songs journey, but I couldn’t resist letting it rip with the sunshine harmonies and fun vibes.

Hope you dig it, cool cats.

Here we are for the second instalment of the final ten! And it’s all about space.

This tune was written and recorded all within the past week, just a little spark of something interesting that turned into the whole song and dance.

Oh boy. COUNTDOWN. Ten songs to go.

Does it feel like the Hottest 100 to you? I’m totally reliving Australia Day. Although it feels like the Hottest 1,000 to me.

I don’t want to say a lot about the meaning of this song; I think it’s one that people will come at differently, and take different things away, so it’s enough to know what it means to you alone. Continue reading
