Song #32: ‘This Love’

This Love

Don’t be fooled, it’s not a love song the way it looks to be; it’s about when a love doesn’t quite live on, when you know it has to end.

Maybe it’s a more mature kind of love song? Who knows.

I am certain everyone has been in this exact place at some time, and at the time it’s about as fun as a stroll through hell. Continue reading

Song #31: ‘Ode’

Ode

I hate to say it two weeks in a row, but this week’s “song” is now also one of my favourites. (See? Not such a bad parent after all – they’re all my favourites…)

It’s also probably one of the most bloody gorgeous and lovely pieces of music that I have ever written. Flying in a hot air ballon? I imagine it feels something like this. Continue reading

Song #30: ‘Hand On Hand’

Hand On Hand

Almost can’t believe this is Week 30 already. It’s wild, just wild. How did that happen, exactly?

I think this week’s song is already one of my favourites – which is like saying you have a favourite child, I suppose. So you can see I must rather like it… or I’m just a terrible parent. Continue reading

Song #29: ‘My Way Home’

My Way Home

I’ve stripped it all back this week; a little folky, a little bluesy. Just a voice and an acoustic guitar, and some thoughts on finding your way. Continue reading

Song #28: ‘Run (Into The Sun)’

Run (Into The Sun)

While I can’t quite remember what happened here, this song just got all jumpy, poppy and dancey all by itself!

And it weighs in at under three minutes, which, for me, has gotta be some sort of record. I hope all you low-attention-spanners out there enjoy it… Continue reading

Song #27: ‘Party Games’

Party Games

And the downhill homeward-bound ride begins!

This week’s song is like a late night review of old times, old craziness, past memories of parties and mess and life.

Or something.

It’s got sections of laidback reflection amidst a sassier, faster, rolling rhythmic chorus.

You might sing it as you stumble home on empty streets in the early hours; a philosophical wry smile on your face.

Stumble on.

Song #26: ‘Come What May’

Come What May

Holy. Sweet. Holies.

I mean, 26 songs, my friends. Twentymotherflippinsix! I mean, I just mean… I don’t know what I mean.

I was trying to explain it the other day, and the best I could do was that it was like how normal people might view a pie eating contest – a normal person could do one pie, maybe one and a half, but imagine stuffing your face with pie after pie after pie, with that clock ticking in the background, you can’t eat anymore, but you have to, you know you have to.

It’s kinda like that. Except I really love pies, so it’s both full on and an absolute joy. Continue reading

Song #25: ‘Cherry Lips’

Cherry Lips

The devil made me do it.

This week’s song is about that inability to stop yourself – there are people I have known who have lost moments, or even lost weeks, where things are crazy and wild, and seemingly full of life, when really they’ve just lost the ability to flick the off switch. Lost control.

It’s written from that perspective, and I love the passion, it’s a really big subject to write and sing about. That feeling of somewhat helpless regret and the surprising wilderness of impulse.

This one has plenty of strings and other bits and pieces in it, and I’m really enjoying listening back to it in fact (which isn’t always the case…). I hope you enjoy it too, the rise and fall of it all.

May it open you up a little.

Song #24: ‘Don’t Stop’

Don't Stop

Get thy groove on.

This week’s tune is a movin’ little bad boy, it’s got a great swing feel and, in righteous style, a tasty bass riff holding it together.

It has by far the most recorded tracks of any song I’ve put out yet, with 20 in total. Takes a bit of time to do that in a week, I say (especially when it’s Budget week – don’t ask).

But it was worth it. Continue reading

Song #23: ‘Guardian Angels’

Guardian Angels

Now, I’m not sure what I was expecting with this song, but it appears to have come out a bit 80s.

Not like crazy glitzy glam gumballs, but a sort of mid-tempo cruisey thing, plucky guitars, bit of synth string action, snappy snare drum, slowish but vibey. Continue reading
